A Permanent Home for Corduroy Media in Oakland: From San Francisco, to Berkeley, Oakland and Emeryville, Corduroy Media has moved a lot over the last 13 years. From spare bedrooms to small studios we have been fortunate to always find a home that gave us space to work and grow together. While we have been blessed to find the right place at the right time, it has long-since been a dream of mine to have a permanent home. Our own building where we could build out an in-house studio, dedicated post-production space and plenty of room for our producers and clients to collaborate. In December of 2015 I signed the title papers for an 8,000 sq ft. warehouse in Oakland to become just that, a permanent home. It has been a long, and at times scary, process but today marks our first day of framing out our new production facilities in that warehouse. Corduroy Media will be housed in half of the building, for the time being, with the ability to grow into the rest of the building later on down the road.My hope is to create a space of creativity, learning and mentorship where not just staff and clients come together, but where young people can learn and participate in the production process. Where newcomers can work with seasoned vets, each drawing inspiration from one another. My goal is to create a sustainable foundation for our company. Eventually I hope to use the large roof of the warehouse to house a large solar array that will help create a sustained and local power source for the production facility.Returning Corduroy Media back to Oakland has been a dream of mine. My wife and I have been fortunate enough to call Oakland home for the last ten years. We both have meandering and transitory roots in the east bay and really think it is one of the best places on the planet. It is a vibrant and unique place that provides endless inspiration and countless opportunities. Oakland offers a “real-life” community where we can challenge one another with some of the most relevant social issues of our time. I look forward to our small creative group benefiting from and contributing to the diversity, vibrancy and authenticity of The Town. Thanks for your time, Carl.
