San Francisco Video Production Company Corduroy Media was blessed to work with upcoming director Brandon Mason on the new Alvin Garrett music video "Never Gonna Find." The project was a blast ... and a lot of hard work... We got done in a single day, with a crew of four, what should have taken 2-3 days with a crew twice the size. Sean, Andrew and I met at the Corduroy Media studio at 5 pm loaded gear into Doug (our grip/camera van) and hit the road. The destination, a ultra modern house on the isolated coast of Northern California - above Jenner.
Two and a half hours later - with a carload of motion sick crew members we arrived and got shooting right away. We shot over 10 scenes from 7:30am - 11:30pm with a short break for lunch. Shooting interior and exterior from performance shots to the narrative storyline we used just about every tool in our van to get the job done. Brandon wanted a super crisp image with plenty of room in post to color so we decided to shoot with our new Canon C300 on CLog using Carl Zeiss Compact Primes. Having a ton of experience shooting music videos Brandon decided he wanted to master at 720p to take advantage of shooting all of the narrative scenes in slow motion. Recording at 48 frames a second we got a smooth and silky picture that could be sped up in post to hit real-time or left as is for actual slow motion.
Brandon Mason, Alvin Garrett and Falizitas Cipolla were all a pleasure to work with. We all learned a lot from Brandon's experience shooting and directing music videos. Alvin brought a ton of energy even late into the night on his fourth and fifth master performance takes and Falizitas was relentless with her ability to engage take after take.
We wish Alvin all the luck in his solo career and look forward to working with Brandon again soon.
Cheers, Carl D. Brown
